During the recent TEX-ABOTA annual meeting in Santa Fe, pledges were made to donate to the Best in Texas Voir Dire Competition. A few people asked why we have to keep raising so much money each year – what costs so much? The simple answer is jurors. We need about 400 jurors for the competition, and we pay them $50 each. That’s about $20,000 each year for that one expense. Having “real” jurors is a crucial part of the experience, and the success of the program. The other expenses include the various awards for individuals and teams, and the meals.
The one thing we haven’t had to pay for is the hundreds of pro bono hours ABOTA members, trial advocacy professors, and this year volunteers from the American Society of Trial Consultants. Together they have created a one-of-a-kind trial advocacy competition that we can all be proud of.
